"Shared Everything" clusters

• I have this disk connected to two machines, why can't they both be using it at once?
• Because it is complicated! You need a new filesystem with locking and cache coherency to make it work
  • Give a hand to the GFS people
  • SGI is developing a clustered XFS
  • Veritas has a cluster filesystem and have talked about a port
• Alternatively, use a client/server system which supports redundancy and cache coherency: CODA, InterMezzo
